DEFINITION OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
High blood pressure is a medical condition which occurs in many individuals. If high blood pressure is not treated on time and if precautions are not taken to improve this medical condition it can lead to serious repercussions and irreversible damages to your life. To understand the definition of high blood pressure you first need to know what is blood pressure and what is its function.
What is blood pressure and why is it necessary?
The normal functioning of the organs of your body is, because you get enough blood that is pumped by the heart to your complete human system, providing each and every part with the required amount of oxygen and nutrients. And the force exerted on the walls of your blood vessels as it circulates through your body is known as blood pressure.
Systolic and Diastolic pressure
The blood pressure readings are measured by 2 numbers and they are systolic and diastolic pressures. The Systolic blood pressure is the higher number and determines the force of blood during the beating of your heart. Diastolic is the pressure when there is some interval or rest between your heartbeats.
So then what is high blood pressure?
Under normal healthy circumstances when your blood pressure is normal the blood flows easily without any obstructions in its path. But sometimes when you indulge in any heavy activity like exercises there are disruptions to the free flow of blood to the various organs, which then makes the heart work harder and pump more blood. This is completely normal as the blood pressure becomes normal when you take some rest.
However some persistent abnormal conditions cause your blood pressure to rise perennially which leads to blockage of the normal blood flow and greater load to the heart. When this increase in blood pressure becomes constant with no signs of decreasing then you are diagnosed with high blood pressure or hypertension.
Readings show whether you have high blood pressure
Under normal conditions the blood pressure readings are 120 systolic over 70 diastolic but when you have high blood pressure the readings start at 140 over 90, though medical experts consider 130 over 80 as the risky threshold.
High blood pressure is dangerous
A poor diet leads to fatty deposits called plaque which builds up in your arteries. These can be the source of obstruction for the free flowing of the blood which can make the heart exert high pressure. The constant high pressure can lead to the hardening of your arteries and make you a victim of heart attack. The plaque can also break off from an artery causing a blockage in another area of your body. Excess weight can also lead to build up of high pressure. If high blood pressure is not treated then it could lead to severe damage to your kidneys, heart and also the eyes causing blindness.
